Keyboard Tips

Tips for digital devices, i.e. keyboard.

Playing alt-cars without support on a keyboard is rather difficult - or even impossible, if you want to match analog gameplay. There is one thing that helps here, and it is a massive advantage. Meet Action Keys. Action keys are a set of 5 buttons that you can press to toggle steering by 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100%. This helps match analog devices by approximating smoothsteering. In conversation, these are referred to as AKs and specific keys as AK1-AK5, where AK1 is 20% etc. To use action keys, press the buttons associated with them (you can bind them in the Options menu). Preferably, you will steer/accelerate with one hand and toggle AKs & cameras with another. Pressing the same action key again will return the steering back to 100%. This might sometimes be necessary - if your car doesn't make the turn with any AK, turn off the AK! The beginner setup for AKs is to not use them on grippy surfaces (like Snow or Desert on road), and to use AK3 for slippery surfaces (like Rally on road or Snow on dirt). If you need precision, it is better at this stage to learn tapping the direction keys. All author times in this club are possible with this setup. As you get more experienced, it is recommended to try and match an AK with the track you're currently playing or even individual turns. The usual range for road/platform blocks is AK3-AK5 for Snow, AK2-AK4 for Rally, AK3-AK5 for Desert.
